Arak University, originally established as Marjan Higher Education School in 1972, is a significant symbol of higher education advancement in Iran. It was founded through the efforts of Dr. Abdolkarim Gharib and a group of distinguished professors, initially serving as a center for teaching sciences.
In 1971, with the support of professors from the University of Tehran and the Tehran Teachers' Training University, the groundwork was laid for establishing a higher education institution in Arak. In October 1972, this educational complex began operations under the name "Marjan Higher Education School," offering programs in physics, chemistry, biology, and Persian language and literature. In 1989, the institution was upgraded to "Arak Teachers' Training University." In 1996, following the approval of its comprehensive plan, it was renamed Arak University. The university’s campus, covering 382 hectares, includes faculties of Basic Sciences, Literature and Humanities, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering, along with additional facilities such as a sports hall, dining services, a mosque, and green spaces. Currently, faculties for Basic Sciences, Engineering, and Sports Sciences operate on this campus.
Today, Arak University comprises eight faculties and seven research centers, covering diverse fields such as basic sciences, engineering, literature and foreign languages, humanities, agricultural sciences, sports sciences, economics and administration, arts and architecture, and interdisciplinary sciences like nanotechnology, nano-bio technology, and mechatronics.
Currently, the university offers 162 academic programs to nearly 7,500 Iranian students and 750 international students. Arak University has 291 faculty members, many of whom are prominent figures in education and research across the country.
Faculty of Sciences
Established in 2002 (1381 in the Persian calendar), the Basic Sciences Faculty was inaugurated with 12,000 square meters of educational and auxiliary space. It was relocated from the central building to the new campus in Sardasht.
This faculty offers undergraduate programs in four academic departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, with seven specializations. At the master's level, it operates with four academic departments and 24 specializations. For doctoral studies, the faculty provides programs in the following fields:
Both full-time and part-time students at various levels benefit from the resources and equipment allocated to each department.
In 2011 (1390 in the Persian calendar), interdisciplinary specializations such as Nano Chemistry, Nano Physics, Biochemistry, and Plant Ecology were introduced. The following year, in 2012 (1391), to expand graduate education, new doctoral programs in Nuclear Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, and Pure Mathematics with specializations in Algebra, Geometry, and Analysis were launched. These programs are supported by experienced faculty members who contribute to scientific and research activities.
These facilities collectively support the academic and research needs of the students and faculty members.
